Common questions
What Is Ear Wax?
Earwax is a natural, protective substance produced by glands in your ear canal. It traps dust, debris and bacteria, lubricates the delicate skin inside your ear, and helps prevent infection — it is a normal and healthy part of how your ears work.
What Are the Symptoms of Ear Wax Build-Up?
Common signs include:
- Reduced hearing or muffled sounds
- A feeling of fullness or blockage in the ear
- Itching, discomfort or mild pain
- Tinnitus (ringing or buzzing in the ear)
- Dizziness or imbalance in some cases
How Often Should I Remove Earwax?
For most people, ears are self‑cleaning and removal is rarely needed. If you are prone to build‑up, we generally recommend assessment every 6–12 months, or sooner if you notice symptoms. We will advise a suitable schedule for you after your examination.
What Techniques Do We Perform?
We use safe, gentle methods tailored to your needs:
- Micro‑suction: Our primary technique — using a fine, precision suction device and camera for clear visibility, ideal for most cases
- Irrigation: Used only when appropriate and safe for your ear health
Who Is This Service Suitable For?
- Suitable for adults aged 18 years and over
- Ideal if you have symptoms of wax build‑up, or have had build‑up before
- Not suitable if you have a perforated eardrum, active ear infection, history of ear surgery, or foreign objects in the ear canal
What to Expect at Your Appointment?
Your full appointment takes 40 minutes:
- We first examine both ears carefully using a specialist camera
- We explain our findings and recommend the best approach
- If removal is needed, we carry out the procedure gently
- We share aftercare advice and answer any questions you have
How to Prepare for Your Appointment?
Use recommended wax‑softening drops (such as medicated olive oil) 2–4 times daily for 5 days before your visit, following the product instructions. This softens wax for easier, more comfortable removal.
What Do I Need to Do After My Appointment?
- Keep ears dry for 7 days: avoid swimming, showering with water entering the ear, or submerging your head
- Do not insert cotton buds, fingers or any objects into your ear canal
- If you have any concerns, contact us or seek medical advice promptly
Are There Any Side Effects?
Side effects are rare and usually mild:
- Temporary mild discomfort, itching or feeling of fullness
- Very slight dizziness during or immediately after the procedure
- Minor irritation or redness — resolves quickly
- Serious complications are extremely rare when carried out by our trained practitioners
